Mirrors are one of my favourite things to make; a simple piece of mirror can be made to come alive when you put it in the right setting. Sometimes I start with some pieces of wood, or a vague idea. I very rarely work from sketchbooks; preferring to let the materials set the creative process going. Then I like to experiment, trying different approaches and techniques. I often just jump in and try something, and as often as not, it doesn't work. Then if I'm lucky, I salvage what I can and try something else. Sometimes I just start again!
I'm not a blacksmith, but I have got a small forge in my workshop, and I like to make simple things like fire pokers and hooks of all sorts. It is often the hook size and shape that gives me the idea of what to do next. Sometimes it is just a flourish of copper leaves, or it may be matching with a nice piece of wood or even stone.
