I began making things out of scrap and discarded junk over 30 years ago. In the 1990s, I spent some time living in a small cottage in rural France. We had little money to buy furniture, so I began making my own from the stuff the previous owner had left in the shed; ladders and wooden planks became bookshelves and a TV stand, dusty barrels were repurposed into tables, and old garden implements became wall hangings and ornaments.
I have always been an artist. I left school at 16 and after 3 years at art college, I went on to work in a number of advertising agencies around Manchester, where I designed everything from adverts for edible dormice to the labels for the Newton & Ridley beer bottles on Coronation Street.
Later, after completing a degree I worked in Amsterdam, drawing cartoon strips and illustrations for publishers and illustrating articles for Vrij Nederlands and Het Parool, two Dutch national newspapers.
Since then, I have continued to illustrate books, draw cartoons and make things for clients worldwide. I have also spent a lot of my time teaching in both further and higher education. I have a PhD in contemporary art and philosophy, and until recently, I was course leader for the Visual Communications MA at the University of Wolverhampton.
